When and how did you become a model?

I’ve always been interested in clothes.  My mother’s a dressmaker and my childhood dream was to be her model.  When I turned 13, I saw a modeling competition in the magazine ”Frida”.  I applied and got chosen amongst with 14 other girls to be in competition with, we did a shoot and an interview and then they chose 8 of us to be in the magazine. Again I was lucky. I can still remember the feeling, I was jumping up and down and was oh so happy – maybe I’ll become a real model, maybe, maybe, maybe.  And so I did.

How did you balance school with modelling?

I felt even more motivated for school when I started modelling, I’ll garantee you that a lot of the girls in 8/9thgrade were jealous, but that didn’t stop me.  I was ambitious and I knew that I had to take this opportunity and kept on fighting.  Whatever I missed in school I had to do on my free time whether I was modelling or not.  But being in a creative atmosphere around people way older then you, seeing things and experiencing things at a very early age made me grow, and I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my modelling experience, New York, loving every day.

What do you like most about modelling?

Working in a creative business, travelling, meeting new people and seeing new things everyday,  getting to know yourself and taking care of yourself,  being able to express yourself through your body and emotions.

Is it hard to find real friends in the industry when you’re travelling all the time?

It is a lonely business because of the travelling.  New hotel rooms, new locations, new crews, new cultures etc.  You need to stay strong mentally and be social to survive.

Did your interest for fashion grow because of modelling?

Absolutely, it’s an inspiring industry.  As far as I can remember my mother and I have always been making clothes for me to wear. Now I get inspiration from a dress at a shoot, get the fabric in Paris, and make new beautiful clothes when I got home.  If you’re not already into the world of fashion before you start modelling, you have to start learning fashion, about the designers you meet, what kind of style they like, you have to try to be the designer and then try to dress in their taste of style for their castings.

Name one shoot that you think was something special.

I did a shoot for Indian Vouge together with Azim Haidaryan (super talented photographer) in the south of India.  It was a great experience beeing in India, seeing the culture, exploring the food and meeting such  friendly people without even sharing the same language.

An interesting thing I’d notice is that Indian men were holding hands.  I got curious thinking, ‘is there more gay men in India then usual?’ So I asked the indian fashion editor.  She told me that men in India are not allowed to be with a woman until he is married, but being with a man is accepted.  For that reason most men have their first sexual experince with another man. How interesting isn’t that?

The pictures from the shoot turned out great and I will never forget the trip to India.

Then there’s of course, less beautiful shoots.  The japanese fashion is very different from what the western culture consider as fashion.  They want you to look super cute and young. However, sometimes they shoot young girls for maturity purposes. It doesn’t matter if you’re only 15, sometimes you’ll have to put on a fake stomach for pregnancy clothes.

Which countries have you been working in and which one did you enjoy the most?

Japan, India, France (Paris), Germany, Denmark, UK (London), Lanzarote, The Carribeans (St Lucia & Puerto Rico), USA (New York & LA) and Sweden of course :)

No particuliar favorites, they’re all great in their own way.  Paris can be tough though, people can be very rude.

How do you stay in shape?

I believe in healthy lifestyle and listening to your body.  I do fun workouts like playing tennis, dancing, biking etc.  I eat a little of everything, too much of anything is no good for you whether it’s only a salad, chocolate or fruit.  If you’re body wants a small piece of chocolate, give it a small piece and feel good about it.  The worst you can do is always feel bad about what you eat unless you eat healthy all the time.  Life is more than being skinny.  Love yourself and your body, the differnece is what makes us unique.  But some quick tips if you really want to loose some, I recommend drinking lots of water, try to eat at a regular time. warm food is better then cold (have a small soup with your meal for example) and try not to drink to much alcohol or sugary drinks.  outfit pics in paris

You are blonde now and before you were a brunette. What do like better?

My natural hair color, light brown.  Its fun being blonde for a little while, but I look forward to getting back to my normal hair color.  The most interesting thing about being blonde was to see the transformation of my warderob because of my new hair color. I love to wear wigs aswell, I have so many, haha. pink hair in paris

I ´ve heard that you like to play with make up. Is that something you were interested in before modelling or did a make-up artist teach you?

It’s the exhibitionist in me when it come to experimenting with make up.  I really like bright colors and fun shapes.  I don’t do it nowadays as much as a few a years ago but I still enjoy beeing my own picasso in front of the mirror.

What´s your favourite piece of clothing?

Right now, my new ring.  It’s gorgeous and insane, it’s my new inspiration for fall.  I bought it at a friends store in Brooklyn, it’s actually for men but I think I’m man enough to wear it.

What´s your favourite place to shop in Stockholm and New York?

Shopping is fun but overrated.  I try to redo my own clothes, and find good cheap clothes/deals.  There’s no limit for how much a girl can shop but I try not to spend to much money on my clothes, plus the warderob isn’t expanding as I’m buying new stuff.  I try to get more fun accessories like hats for example, simple thing like that changes your styles without making you broke.

I like Zara, it’s inexpensive and classical, also H&M is good from time to time, they got good stockings.  I like making crazy/fun finds at Salvation Army, flea markets or other random places.  Vintage clothing is getting over priced so looking in your dear mother’s warderob, you’ll find the best vintage pieces.  The shopping in Stockholm is almost easier then here in New York.  You can spend days and days shopping in New York, while in Stockholm the stores are closer.  I love Cheap monday, Monki, David & martin and more.  But buying stuff when you’re travelling will make you and your stile unique around your friends.

What do you imagine you’d be working with if you weren’t modelling?
I’m actually leaving the modelling scene more and more at the moment.  I am doing a Kate Spade campaign (that is running all round the city right now. It is a little weird to see yourself on big print ads but am starting school and want to develop my other interests.  I’m gonna study Product Design at NYU, and I’m very excited.  I’m also working at a creative reqruitment agency in Meat Packing district, finding new talents for example graphic designers and other creative people to put them in new work positions.  After work I help my boyfriend Adriaan with his company which he started recently and its going really well.  You can check it out on www.facebook.com/baltbalt and look at the website www.balt.us for more info.

I love you New York, it never get’s boring here, nothing is too weird or crazy.  What’s weird is not to be weird.

I really like pretty much something with studs. If I could put on a wardrobe covered in studs from head to toe I probably would. So obviously I did a double take for this Anthro studded leather bag. Of course I'd prefer it in black with silver studs, but now I

My grandfather, Ernest Kallback, moved from Vernland south of Stockholm to America in the early 1920s, three years later sending for his wife, Hildur Maria, and their three sons to come over in steerage to Ellis Island in New York Harbor. My grandparents lived up near Mt. Kisco and Katonah, New York, working on estates there. Two of his sons didn't live past high school, the third serving in WWII and my father, now buried at Arlington National Cemetery for his service in the Navy. As an older dad myself, I have four grown children 27, 28, 29, and 30, two living in New Jersey, one in upper state New York, and the fourth down here near me at my retirement home in the mountains of Western North Carolina. He had served in the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan. I don't know if our families are related back in Sweden, but I wish you well.

Caroline, I'd like to refute what the Indian fashion editor told you about Indian men having their first sexual experience with men. I find it quite laughable that that was said; actually, I think what the fashion editor meant was this: In India, marriage is of great value. It is of sacred importance that both men and women remain virgins until marriage so that upon entering the marital threshold, they are "pure" and remain "pure" to each other thereafter, i.e, loyal to each other after their first sexual experience. However, this scenario was predominant in the 1950s. Nowadays, it is not uncommon for men and women to have had multiple sexual experiences before marriage. As for the men holding hands, it is merely a sign of companionship. It is always best to keep in mind that India is one hell of a complex country with too contrasts and complements :) p.s - the Vogue India issue that you did was fantastic and it remains as one of my favourite shoots!
